Age Spots: How They Occur and How to Get Rid of Them

Fortunately, age spots are usually harmless, but nobody actually wants to have them. Luckily there are ways to prevent, fade, and even remove those annoying age spots.

What are age spots and who can get them?
Age spots, also known as liver spots, are identically colored, randomly occurring dark spots, typically more common as you age. These spots are caused by prolonged sun exposure, which is why they are more prevalent the older you get. They appear in areas more exposed to sun, and are usually more common in people with fair skin, though anyone can get them. They are caused by too much melanin, and since melanin is produced from sun exposure to the skin, age spots are caused by time spend unprotected in the sun. Fortunately there are ways to protect your skin from sun damage, which will help prevent those bothersome age spots.

How can they be prevented?
Even though age spots are caused by sun exposure, this doesn't mean you have to avoid the sun completely. The skin has to be repeatedly bombarded with sun and harmful UV ray exposure without any protection before age spots appear. Try to avoid the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 3 p.m., which is when the most harmful rays are at their peak. If you do have to go outside, wear sunscreen and aim to reapply it every two hours of sun exposure for maximum protection. Try to use one with a sun protecting factor (SPF) of at least 30. Sunscreen is the easiest way to protect your skin and prevent against age spots. Just adding such a tiny step to your morning routine will help so much to defend against age spots and other sun related skin dangers. Of course, a body that is taken care of, will be stronger and more capable of protecting your skin as well. A healthy diet full of foods containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are good for the skin will help tremendously. Supplements such as multivitamins specifically for the skin, more specifically ones that help at a cellular level, such as the ASEA Redox Science supplement, will help keep your body and your skin in its prime.

How can existing age spots be erased?

Since age spots are a change to your skin on a cellular level, they can be hard to get rid of once you already have them. Fortunately, there are plenty of at home treatments you can try to lighten or nearly eliminate age spots! 
There are plenty of natural ways you can try to eliminate your sun spots. Applying Vitamin E oil to your skin is one of the most natural and effective ways to help fade  them. It has been recognized for its ability to fade scars for a long time. Using soaps and lotions that contain Kojic acid is another easy way to fade these spots. You can find products containing this skin healing ingredient without a prescription. 
If your age spots are not fading with over the counter treatments, there are professional services that can help erase them as well, such as cryotherapy, which freezes them with liquid nitrogen to remove them. Chemical peels and laser resurfacing have been effective in erasing age spots, but can be expensive, and will leave your skin sensitive for a few days after.

Fortunately, there are ways to fade and remove age spots. However, the easiest way to avoid them is to protect your skin and prevent them before they happen. Luckily it is as easy as using sunscreen and supplementing your diet with powerful nutrients to help your skin.
