Oils are more and more becoming a staple in homes for added fragrance as well as health and mental benefits. Using a diffuser is a common way to spread these oil scents around an area, but how do you know your diffuser is safe to use in your home? Here are some tips.

Essential oils have many health-friendly uses within the body and home. When the aromatic properties of oils are used, they are usually done so through a diffuser. You’ve probably seen diffusers everywhere, from the mall to your local farmer’s market. While natural resources like essential oils are often safe and effective, it is also important to note the possible risks involved with them and the steps that need to be taken to keep diffusers safe.

What Exactly do Diffusers do?

Diffusers are usually separated into two main categories, reed and electric. Reed diffusers work by absorbing essential oils through slim wooden sticks like the roots of a plant. The reeds then release the scent into the air through a very slow process. Some varieties do away with the reeds and place a wooden globe or flower at the top of the reservoir to release fragrance. Electric diffusers rely on heat, water, ultrasonic waves, and other means to fill the air with the oils’ aroma. Electric diffusers can be used simultaneously as humidifiers or vaporizers to emit a mist of either pure oil or a diluted solution of oils.

Benefits of Using Diffusers

The aromatherapy properties of essential oils make them a staple in millions of homes. The therapeutic benefits of their scents aren’t limited to making guests comfortable, or simply setting the mood for a home. Certain scents, such as lavender, can elicit a calming mood that can help people feel relaxed and help some fall asleep. Others can invoke energy and create an electric atmosphere or elevate the overall temper of the setting. On top of that, essential oils have been proven to demonstrate cleansing properties. When these oils are diffused into a mist, they can purify the air. Examples include doTERRA products like peppermint and tea tree oils.

Possible Risks & Dangers of Diffusers

Diffusers themselves minimize several of the risks associated with using essential oils. This comes as most precautions involve applying the oils directly to the skin, or ingesting them. Since diffusers don’t intentionally cause ingestion or direct contact of oils with the skin, they are mostly harmless. However, children may be susceptible to trying to swallow the oils within the reservoirs, or spill the contents on themselves. Diffusers should be kept out of reach of children or pets to prevent such an occurrence. Other than that, diffusers should be used in moderation, especially when using 100% oil.

Overall, oil diffusers are a generally safe and effective alternative to most store-bought air fresheners. It is important to keep caution in mind to keep others out of harm’s way. Overall, diffusers offer multiple benefits and lasting impressions in any home they are used in.

Hi,Brooke.  Thanks for this article.  I suggest an edit for the title, "Are Diffusers Really Safe?"  (Safe is a more appropriate words since only a person can be healthy.)  Also, please include a brief abstract before the article and a very bried (80 word max) bio at the end. Then I will gladly send this on to the publishers for possible inclusion in an upcoming issue.
