We always make time for the things that are most enjoyable to us. It's not that the important things aren't a priority, but it is easier to motivate ourselves when we know joy is on the way. So much of our lives are riddled with responsibilities. It's easy to understand how it can be difficult to prioritize more work in the little free time we have. This is why working out and exercising can be difficult for some. We procrastinate for a multitude of reasons such as fear of failure, fear of success, perfectionism, confusion, short-term gratification versus long-term gratification, and the list goes on.
Exercising is an important aspect for both the mind and the body. When we exercise it helps our body build muscle, improve strength and endurance, and enhances our heart health. Exercise can also do wonders for the mind such as relieving stress and releasing endorphins, which aid in a boosted mood.
The key however is getting ourselves to participate in something that requires energy but benefits us in multiple ways. A great way to do this is by incorporating an exercise that we like and enjoy.
There are various types of exercise and movement out there. We need only to explore those options and choose what is best for ourselves. Whether we like something as simple as walking or running on a bright, sunny day, or we are in need of something more explorative like hiking with a group. We could even take it a step further by bringing a camera to document the fun time we are having.
Some of us might enjoy joining a team in sports such as tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, or football. Whether it is a team in high school or college, or meeting up with our buddies for a few games a month the options are endless, and for those that are more creative in nature we might enjoy taking a dance class. Maybe we enjoy the lively music, and meeting people in our community that have the same interests. Whatever it is that pulls us to move we should begin there by exploring that option.
We must begin to look within and explore what we truly enjoy in this life, and how we can add this and enjoy exercise. We can make it a celebration rather than another remedial task on our to-do list. This is not to say that regular workouts aren't important. They definitely have a place. They are wonderful in targeting areas that we would like to change about ourselves, but if we are just beginning and struggling with moving at all, finding enjoyment with exercise could be a great first step to a fulfilling journey!
We may recall Newton's First Law of Motion, “an object in rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.“ We should let our body be that object, and stay in motion for a better living and a better life. Exercise can be enjoyed, and when done right will be enjoyed. We need only the courage to begin our journey, to explore our options, and strive for our goals with a bit of optimism and enjoyment!
