Religion and Our Children
I was recently asked, when I BElieve is the appropriate time to teach our children about religion, something I personally, do NOT ascribe to, in the first place.
Interesting, of ALL the questions I was posed, this is the ONE that I have CHOSEn to respond to, and yet, it IS.
As both a child mySELF and a parent to a child, I have had the AWEsome GIFT of BEing the experience of both sides of this equation, the teacher and the
student. In TRUTH, whether the
parent or the child, we are ALLways BOTH the teacher and the student.
Amazing how ONEderFully Balanced is our BEingenss font-family:Wingdings;mso-char-type:symbol;mso-symbol-font-family:Wingdings"">J
Growing up in my traditional Jewish family home, religion was merely another aspect of our life. I learned my name, my
gender, my religion, all around the same time, just another aspect of me, it
simply was, what it was. We grew
up going to annual traditional celebrations of our religious heritage with
other of our family members & close friends.
It was a gathering for the purposes of celebrating something I really did NOT connect to, though, as I grew, so too did my education into that which we were
gathering to celebrate.
I learned what the celebrations were about and there was some connection established, yet still, I was never imbued with a fervent religious
association. I was far more
affected by my connection to EVERYONE, regardless of their religious
associations, or for that matter, any other affixed attributes of physical
When I was blessed the birth of my son, having mySELF BEen given the opportunity to traverse the historical pathways of my religious lineage, in addition to many
of the other multi dimensional levels thereof, I ensured this gifted
Opportunity BE passed on to my son, as well.yes"">
BEing ‘on the other side’ of the fence, I was much more awares to HOW religious concepts were introduced.
Especially as one who, by the time I had my son, had completely disassociated mySELF with religion, I was that much more consciously aware of both its introduction into
my son’s life as well as the means by which it was.
Religion in a family IS, like geographical location, nutritional lifestyle, socio-economic status, one of those things that simply ‘comes up’. Religion will finds its own way to YOU
and yOUR children. It’s not really
something we need to ‘plan’ to teach our children as it IS such a integral
aspect currently, of the WHOLE of our Universal Family. It’s impossible to shield a BEing, let
alone a small, innocent, young child from the religious undertones, overtones,
and just plain ‘ol tones of religiousity that permeate every fiber of our
existence. It’s on our money,
taught in our schools, even when not taught directly, religion plays a role in
our history and thus to learn history is to learn religion, it’s in our advertising,
our constitutions, rules, & laws that govern ALL of WE, not to mention
every member of our family, friends, community, society, Universal Family. Teaching religion IS more of a RESPONSE
to that which our children see, hear, & experience in their day to day
lives, BEing another child of our Earth School~~it exists from DAY ONE.
I think the more appropriate question is not the “when” but the “WHAT” DO we teach our children regarding religion?
Amongst several others:
IS it right to impart our religion as the end-ALL, BE-ALL of ALL that IS religion to our children?
IS it right that we teach our children that they HAVE to BE the religion that WE ARE, BEcause that is our religion?
DO we have to BE tied indefinitely to one religion?
DO we have to BE defined by the religion of our parents?yes""> our lineage?
Obviously, as one who DOes NOT herSELF associate with religion, my answers are quite clear, however, this IS something we EACH have the Free Will to CHOOSE to
answer for our SELVes, and IS definitely WORTHY of the Pondering to so DO.
Why DO YOU BElieve what YOU DO?
IS it simply BEcause yOUR parents told YOU to?
Have YOU DOne any research?
Figured out the in’s and out’s of yOUR religion, when it BEgan, the premise for its existence, the tenets by which it operates?
Have YOU asked whether or NOT it ‘jives’ with YOU & yOUR personal FEELings about how our world, our BEingness functions?
That’s what religion IS ALL about isn’t it?
Giving us the answer to the GREATEST QUESTION ever Asked…….
“What IS the Meaning of Life?”.
How DOes our world, our existence, coming into & out of BEing a Human really work??
Religion~which ever branch it may BE~ is inescapable to any, for it IS one of the fundamental hypothesis currently, regarding a question that each of we, inherently, at some
point in our lives, ponders.
We ALL so DO, Ponder about life, about ME, about YOU, from the moment we arrive and we verbalize such, as soon as we BEgin to talk, with the ALL too famous
saying of our “Terrible Two Toddlers” – “WHY?”.
As we BEgin to discover the answer to this question, as we BEgin to recognize that within SELF we house ALL the answers to our questions, religions will no longer
BE such a HUGE aspect of our Universal Family.yes""> They will finally take their place as but ONE of the many
hypothesis about life and pathways by which one may so journey, and then……then
shall BE the time to ask, “When is the best time to introduce the tenets of the
school of “Religion” and its many faculties?”, like a course in University,
teaching of the History, the Lineage of a people.
