The Myth About "Shutting your Mind Off" in Meditation

I meet a lot of people who say they can’t meditate because they just can’t turn their brain off. Well, what if you’re approaching meditation completely wrong and instead of trying to shut your mind off you learned how to engage it in a positive way?

That’s what I had to do because like so many, I have never been able to ‘get silent’ in the head. My mind is always busy thinking up cool ideas, dreaming of future adventures and wondering what the heck I should do next in my lifelong vision quest…

But instead of trying to force my brain to be quiet I have learned that it is more valuable to make friends with it. I realize that my mind is my most powerful asset, next to my heart, when it comes to creating my life and reality how I want it to be. So instead of engaging in a power struggle (Me vs Mind) I have learned ways to consciously work with my mind for my own greater good.

The difference has transformed my life and business… and it’ll do the same for you!

The thing is, meditation does not have to be difficult. It can be easy. Meditation does not have to take tons of time. It can be all the time, anywhere you are. Meditation does not need to be dogmatic, strict or serious either. It can be fun and it can be like a game that you play inside of yourself.

Group of young people have meditation on yoga class. Yoga concept.

There are many techniques that can support you to find that peaceful place within yourself, and silently yelling at your mind to shut up is probably one of the most challenging ways to get there.

Breath practices, toning, chanting mantras, listening to nature, scanning your body, feeling gratitude, fine-tuning your imagination, positive affirmations, movement, dance, sports and making love are all ways that we can access that deeper, more expansive connection to our Self and the very essence of life that created us.

Technique is trump though. Giving your mind a proven technique that keeps it ‘entertained in a positive way’ as I like to say, is the trick to a fulfilling, rich practice (and life). No matter what ‘the Gurus’ or Deepak Chopra say, there is no ‘best’ technique for all people, which is why I encourage you to be curious, listen to different teachers and explore a multitude of styles in order to find your Zen in the way that meets your needs best. After a while if you find yourself getting bored, then try something new, switch it up or make some adjustments. It is likely that your practice will evolve as you do.

The most important part about meditation is that you show up consistently and do the practice, especially when you don’t want to. Meditating once a week, once a month or once in your life is not going to do a whole lot of good. Transformation happens when you become consistent because it is your habits that make you who you are.

As you commit to your practice everyday you will begin to carve new neural pathways in your mind, you will unwind your stressed nervous system and you will tune into your intuition or ‘true voice’more consistently — all of these things working for you will change your life and your reality in very positive ways. There is no way it can’t because even when so-called ‘negative things’ happen to you, you will be in a clearer frame of mind to be open to something good coming of the challenge.

You don’t have to believe me, but if you’re not willing to try a meditation experiment and commit to a practice everyday for at least 21 days, then you will never know the true benefits of how much meditation can and will change your life. You could even start today… actually, you could start RIGHT NOW by putting on your headphones and listening to the breath practice below.
